Breaking down language barriers with AI.

It’s not something one would notice given its ubiquity, but English, for its status as the world’s default language, has surprisingly few speakers in the grand scheme of the world. It’s estimated that only 25% of the world population speaks English, which is surprising given its dominance. Despite this relatively low number of speakers, the cultural influence of the anglosphere holds a disproportionate sway globally. More than 50% of the world’s internet content is in English, alongside the other endless facets of pop culture like movies, songs, books, and more.

For the 6 billion non-English speakers, this content is only accessible through dubs and manual translations, which are often inconsistent and context-unaware, yet expensive, manual and labour-intensive to procure. A dub by a studio for a single movie can take up to months to finalise, hampered by the entire logistical processes of finding suitable native voice actors, scheduling them based on their availability, translating original scripts manually, recording for hours in a studio, and spending additional time on post-production.

Imagine being on the wrong side of the English divide: wanting to watch a movie, but only being restricted to an awkwardly dubbed version of it, or wanting to learn a new subject, but unable to find resources on it in a language you understand. These are some real problems faced across the world, which camb.ai’s founder Akshat Prakash strongly relates to. Hailing from Ghaziabad, he remembers experiencing badly dubbed Hollywood movies in Hindi that were jarring to watch and took out any semblance of immersion. Determined to provide a better content experience for future generations, he founded camb.ai in 2022.

We’re thrilled to join in camb.ai’s pre-seed round to pave the path towards language accessibility together.

Offering an unprecedented full suite of translation services for text, videos, audio, images, and more at 5x the speed and 10x the reduced cost, camb.ai offers a much-needed step to automate the production of accurate and contextual translations. Offering both zero-shot and deeply-trained solutions, we’re excited about the many possibilities they bring, not just in entertainment, but across education, healthcare, and many more by connecting millions to opportunities once denied by language barriers.

We believe their product is best experienced firsthand. Take a look at their zero-shot rendition of a speech that factors in background noises and provides context to figures of speech:

In particular, we were awed at the excellent level of immersion they bring to the translated result while offering an unprecedented plug-and-play onboarding for any file format. This video that had been deeply trained for a couple of days best illustrates our excitement:

Content creators looking to expand their worldwide reach can look forward to using their dubbing tool, which supports 78 languages and provides real-time, immersive dubbing utilising voice cloning, lip-syncing, background noise correction, in-image text translation and more. Eventually, we believe them to be a key production step for every bit of content out there.

Camb.ai’s technical prowess is spearheaded by Akshat, a former Apple Siri engineer and founder of Slingshot, a tech talent community platform that was previously acquired. Together with his team of the brightest AI talents around, we are confident in their ability to build and execute their plan.
We believe in the ability of camb.ai to change the way people consume information, bringing a much-needed step forward for inclusivity. We’re excited to play a part in breaking the world’s language barriers and opening up accessibility to content.
